CORRECTIONAL
SERVICES DEMONSTRATION
Early commercial success in the application
of iris recognition technology was found in
its deployment to US correctional service facilities,
visitor monitoring being the prime use. More
than one hundred facilities now use the technology
in the USA alone.
In
Australia correctional service applications
are growing with units deployed in two facilities.
Staff and visitor registration remains a prime
use of the technology. However growing interest
is being found for use where prisoners need
to be identified.
That
users do not need to touch any interface means
damage to equipment is reduced or removed altogether.
The cameras have demonstrated their ability
to work through laminated/toughened plastics,
an attribute which adds to their utility in
high security areas.
The
application demonstrated here is that drawn
from one facility which has placed iris recognition
in a trial by which the medication of the prisoners
is monitored. Absolute identification removes
the ability for inmates to claim medication
prescribed to other inmates, or receive multiple
doses in a day. This trial underscores the ability
to deploy the technology in a wide variety of
applications.
