FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Iris Recognition Technology?

IRT is a biometric identification technology offering unparalleled security for access control and identity management. Using the unmatched identification power of the iris of the eye, IRT is widely acknowledged as the most accurate, safest and fastest human authentication system in existence, surpassing other biometrics such as fingerprinting, retinal scanning and even DNA.

How does Iris Recognition work?

A black and white digital photograph is first taken of the iris. This image is converted into an encrypted, 512 byte code. On subsequent identifications, the user's IrisCode!" is again captured and matched to the database. This process is accomplished in under 2 seconds.

Is my iris stored on the database?

No image of the iris is retained, only the encrypted IrisCode!". This code cannot be reconstructed to form an image of the iris.

Is a laser shot into my eye?

No. Iris Recognition is a completely different technology to retinal scanning. Unlike these systems where light is beamed into the eye, Iris Recognition relies on a simple, safe black and white photograph.

What about fingerprinting/facial/voice recognition?

Independent testing has proven time and time again that Iris Recognition is statistically the most accurate human authentication technology on the market. Additionally, IRT is a non-contact, non-invasive technology involving no physical interaction between the user and the camera.

Can everyone use it?

There is a very small outlier population that cannot use Iris Recognition. These are mainly people who have no iris at all (rare) or have experienced extreme trauma and scarring to both eyes. If only one eye has been damaged however, a user can still be enrolled and recognized.

Most eye surgeries, including laser, make no difference to the recognition process. A small percentage of cases may require a simple re-enrolment.

Can I be recognized without my knowledge?

Iris Recognition is strictly an "opt in" technology. Unlike some other identification systems, users must consciously present their eye to the camera in order for a recognition or enrolment to take place. Users must be within two feet of the camera and position themselves precisely meaning that unauthorized identification is impossible.

Why should I replace my current prox card/pin code/key system with Iris Recognition?

Iris Recognition has many advantages over other identification and access systems. Unlike a key, password or prox card, a person's iris is non-transferable. It cannot be lost, stolen, borrowed or duplicated. In addition to increasing security, this eliminated many of the ongoing costs associated with other such systems.

Is there anything Iris Recognition cannot do?

Iris Recognition is not suitable for any surveillance functions, or for the identification of people at a distance. To assist in achieving that utility, facial recognition technologies are ideally suited, albeit without the forensic degree of accuracy offered by iris recognition. For many security environments bringing iris and face recognition technologies together makes sense.

Iris Recognition is also faster, safer and more accurate than other biometrics.
